The Clwyd Clippers is a men's chorus based in Kinnerton, about 6 miles from Chester. Our members are drawn from across the North West of England and North Wales. We enjoy singing unaccompanied four part harmony in the barbershop style - think of the Gareth Malone BBC series "The Naked Choir".
So what is four part harmony ?
In four part harmony the melody of the song is sung by the voice part known as the lead, the second highest of the four. The other parts provide the harmonies around the lead line. The tenor is the highest and the bass part, as you might expect, provides the harmony at the lower end of the scale. The baritone "fills in" the gaps which may be above or below the lead voice part.
We are primarily known as a barbershop chorus, but our repertoire includes songs of all genres and ages. We sing songs from musicals, traditional songs, choral songs and pop songs. Arrangements of recent hits have proved particularly popular on our "sing outs".
Our Music Team
The Clwyd Clippers is fortunate to have two talented Music Directors at the helm of the club. They bring together a vast array of experience and knowledge, all of which is focussed on the club and its members. Rhiannon is an experienced coach and judge. Danny is training to join the next generation of Music Directors bringing his youth and enthusiasm into the mix.
Music Director - Rhiannon Owens-Hall
Rhiannon attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying cello and directing. She is a Graduate of the Royal Schools of Music, Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music and an Associate of the Royal College of Music. Rhiannon's involvement with singing spans some forty years as a performer, director and coach. She has worked with both the British Youth Choir Federation and Sing for Pleasure in England. Rhiannon has been closely associated with barbershop singing in the UK since the formation of the British Association, and was instrumental in developing formal judging systems for competitions. She has Gold medals as both director and as a quartet singer.
Assistant Music Director - Danny Spindler
Danny began to take an interest in piano playing at eighteen. Having been mainly self-taught he met concert pianist and teacher, John Gough, whom he studied under whilst preparing for conservatoire auditions. He continued his studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, graduating with a Bmus Hons in 2015. Danny is a keen composer and has premiered his works at RWCMD. In 2016, he began working with Mold Barbershop Harmony Club, appointed as Assistant Music Director under the guidance of Rhiannon.
